When reversing your vehicle, be it for parking or just maneuvering, there is always a risk that you might hit an object or even an animal or pedestrian.

This happens because in most vehicles, even with the help of rear view mirrors, you can’t really see everything happening at the back of the vehicle.

But this is not a new problem by any means, and a solution came quite a long time ago, in the form of rear view cameras. What is news is the fact that US planned to make such features mandatory on new vehicles. This change is set to be applied by 2018, and manufacturers have to consider this if they wish to sell their product state-side.

The reasoning behind this is the fact that 58 to 69 lives are lost in accidents cause by reversing vehicles. Victims include mostly elderly people and small children, who either don’t notice a car backing up or cannot react properly. As for the car makers, this law will cost them around $45 if the vehicle already has a display or up to $142 if it doesn’t.
